Deze zoëtrope of zoötrope is van Franse makelij (Delacour & Bakes) en dateert wellicht uit de jaren 70 van de 19de eeuw. 

This zoetrope or zooptrope was made in French (Delacour & Bakes) and probably dates from around 1870.

De zoëtrope is een animatie-speeltje dat werd uitgevonden in 1834 door de Britse wetenschapper William George Horner. De zoëtrope is de opvolger van de fenakistiscope die enkele jaren voordien ongeveer gelijktijdig werd uitgevonden door de Belg  Joseph Plateau en de Oostenrijker Simon Stampfer.

The zoetrope is an animation toy that was invented in 1834 by the British scientist William George Horner. The zoëtrope is the successor of the phenakistiscope that was invented almost simultaneously a few years earlier by the Belgian Joseph Plateau and the Austrian Simon Stampfer.

De zoëtrope bestaat uit een draaiende cilinder met verschillende verticaal uitgesneden sleuven. De cilinder kon zowel bestaan uit karton of metaal.

The zoetrope consists of an rotating cylinder with various vertically cut slots. The cylinder consists of cardboard or metal.

Aan de binnenzijde van de cilinder werd een papieren strook geplaatst met animatietekeningen. Als de cilinder wordt rondgedraaid en je bekijkt de tekeningen door de sleuven dan komt de animatie 'tot leven'.

A paper strip with animated drawings was placed on the inside of the cylinder. When you turn the cylinder and view the drawings through the slots, the animation comes 'to life'.
